Grab a Buddy and Get Walkin’ at the 7th Annual Buddy Walk!
By Susan Magnotta
Luzerne County Down Syndrome Network invites one and all to grab a buddy and head out to the 7th Annual Buddy Walk, on October 2, at Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre. This fun, family event started as an endeavor to advance inclusion for people with Down Syndrome and raise awareness and money for research and education. Family and friends can enjoy a one mile walk around the track at 1pm, with registration beginning at noon.
“Our goal this year is to have 1,000 walkers,” says Barbra Wasko, local Buddy Walk organizer. “The walk hopes to promote awareness that children with Down Syndrome, like all children, are to be loved, accepted and celebrated for who they are. Every child with Down Syndrome is unique in his or her own way. Some can do just about everything a typical child can, but some cannot. But each child has an opportunity to be happy, successful and use their special gifts to have a positive impact on the world around them. In this way, we are all the same.”
Proceeds from past Buddy Walk’s have supported local arts and theater programs and swim lessons for children and adults with Down Syndrome. This year, on October 29, Arts YOUniverse in Wilkes-Barre will feature On the Down Beat, which will include drama, dancing, singing and musical performances.
So grab your buddies and get walking this fall and support this worthwhile event. For more information on the Buddy Walk or to register online, visit downsyndromenetwork.org or call 708-1744.
