Back to School Tips for Busy Families
By Susan Magnotta
When Benjamin Franklin famously said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” he may not have had back-to-school time in mind, but his words can certainly have a positive effect on keeping our homes running smoothly. A little thought and preparation can help keep the chaos to a minimum freeing up time to enjoy our time with our kids a bit more.
Parents Prep List:
• Prepare a schedule listing times for waking up, getting dressed, brushing teeth, eating, time to leave for school, etc. and post it where visible. A timeline can be very helpful in keeping both parents and children on track in the morning.
• Designate a specific area for each child’s coat, shoes, backpack, sports gear, etc. such as a closet shelf, cubby, or milk crate.
• Create an area for incoming/outgoing papers such as permission slips, newsletters, and school to-do lists.
• Organize a binder with a folder for each child to protect school, sports and after-school activity information.
The Night Before:
• Lay out school outfits, sports clothes and whatever your child will need for the next day.
• Pack backpacks and lunchboxes and check to make sure all homework is done and papers are signed.
The Morning:
• Stick to the plan. If you have a timeline, follow it as closely as possible. If you feel yourself rushing, try waking kids up 15 minutes earlier.
• Consider eliminating TV, electronic games, computers, and other distractions.
After School:
• Try and choose a set time for homework so that kids know what to expect.
• If after-school activities keep your family running, meals with minimal prep-time may give your more time to sit down together as a family.
Sweet Dreams
• Maintain a consistent bedtime routine.
Every family is unique and there is not a one-size-fits all approach to parenting. However, maintaining a routine may minimize chaos and make life a little more predictable.
