When Angela DeMuro was blessed with a third child at the age of 41, little did she know that she would also be blessed with a new career as a children’s author. For 20 years, Angela worked as a writer and artist, with her works published and exhibited as wall and ceiling murals, cartoon strips, and newspaper columns. While her primary focus has always been drawing and painting, she says it’s not a surprise that she’s now involved with children’s books.
According to Angela, “I was always a closet children’s story writer wannabe.
The MU™ birds originated when Angela was decorating her son’s nursery and felt inspired to paint a series of silly birds. When their son was born, Angela’s husband, Douglas Burak, started calling him Mu. The baby fell in love with the birds on his walls and they were coined MU™ birds, giving rise to the idea for a children’s book.
Her first book, The Land of MU™, is a collection of the original 12 color prints that decorate her son’s room and includes a short story about the MU™’s creation. The second book in the series, I Already Knew I Loved YOU!, is an early reader picture book that tells the story of a mother MU™ bird wondering what her baby will be like as she waits for him to hatch from his egg.
Although the MU™ birds and their stories are special to her, I Already Knew I Loved YOU! is especially close to Angela’s heart. “I wrote that story when I was pregnant, and when I first read it to my editor, I cried,” she says. “Obviously, it’s how I felt at the time, and I’m just really attached to it.”
The third book in the series, Good Night My Little MU™, was released on April 24th and tells the story of Milo Mu’s bedtime routine, being tucked in safe and warm.
All three books were written and illustrated by Angela and include fun coloring pages at the end.
Her goal for the MU™ book series is to bring joy to children and adults alike.
“I feel like the MU™ birds are messengers of happiness,” she says. “You just look at them and they make you laugh.”
She hopes to spread the MU™ birds’ happiness as far as she can. A Land of MU™ television show, comic strip, and toy line are in development.
As if the Land of MU™ weren’t enough to keep her busy, Angela is also working on a series of chapter books for 6-13 year-olds. Episode One in her Kat Sinclaire the Pink-Haired Girl™ series will be released on June 24th. These books tell the story of eleven-year-old Kat Sinclaire™, a self-proclaimed “Faeryologist” who goes to live with her aunt in an old Victorian home. Episode One has Kat beginning to investigate the existence of Faeires and is filled with magic, wonders, and spells. Kat allows you to explore her world though her diary.
Angela hosts events throughout the area, including pajama and coloring parties, story readings, and book signings. At her readings, Angela uses a baby MU™ bird puppet and dresses as a MU™ bird, donning pajamas custom-made for her by Oh-Zie Designs. These events are fun and inter-active and she constantly adjusts her methods so children can get the full MU™ experience.
She will be reading her two Land of MU™ books at NEPA Family Magazine’s 10th Birthday Party at the Land at Hillside Farms on June 25th. Visit nepafamily.com for more information about the reading and the party.
